CAN YOU FIND THE TOTAL VOLTAGE? MOST PEOPLE ADD THEM TOO QUICKLY!
Take a close look at this battery setup.
There are four batteries, and each one is rated at 12 volts.
So the question seems ridiculously easy:
12 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 48 volts.
Right?
Not so fast!
This little circuit has a trick — and the answer depends entirely on how the batteries are connected.
Look carefully at the wires.
The positive (+) terminals of all four batteries are connected together.
The negative (−) terminals are also connected together.
That means the batteries are connected in PARALLEL, not in series.
And that changes everything.
SO WHAT IS THE TOTAL VOLTAGE?
When identical batteries are connected in parallel, the voltage does not simply add together.
Instead, the voltage across the parallel bank remains the same as the voltage of one battery.
Each battery = 12V
Therefore:
Total voltage = 12VNot 24V.
Not 36V.
And definitely not 48V.
WHY DOESN’T THE VOLTAGE ADD UP?
Think of it this way:
In a series connection, the positive terminal of one battery connects to the negative terminal of the next.
That’s when the voltages add:
12V + 12V + 12V + 12V = 48V
But that’s NOT what is happening in this picture.
Here, all the positive terminals share one connection, while all the negative terminals share the other.
That’s a parallel connection.
So the voltage stays at:
12 VOLTSThe main benefit of putting batteries in parallel is not higher voltage. It can increase the available capacity and, depending on the batteries and system design, the amount of current the battery bank can deliver.
THE TRICK IS IN THE WIRES!
This puzzle isn’t really testing your ability to add numbers.
It’s testing whether you notice the difference between:
SERIES → voltage adds up PARALLEL → voltage stays the sameSo before you answer, ignore the number of batteries for a moment…
Look at the wires.
What is your answer?A) 12V
B) 24V
C) 36V
D) 48V
Comment your answer BEFORE checking the reveal!
Did you immediately choose 48V… or did you spot the parallel connection?
