Meanwhile, Patricia and Scott became increasingly disruptive downstairs. Patricia insisted she had a legal right to see her granddaughter, while Scott demanded that security force Daniel to come speak with them, until hospital administrators warned both that they would be removed if they continued.
At 11:03, Patricia sent Daniel another message.
“We made a mistake. Don’t punish us publicly.”
Scott followed with his own.
“The media is twisting everything. Come downstairs and fix this.”
Daniel read both messages twice. Neither contained an apology, neither asked whether Lily was awake, and neither asked whether Daniel needed anything, making their real concern painfully obvious: they weren’t worried about Lily, they were worried about how they looked.
Daniel reopened the family group chat and looked again at the photograph of Lily unconscious beneath Patricia’s message. Then he slowly typed the response he’d been too conditioned to give earlier.
“You had the truth before the news did. The only thing that changed was that now the world is watching.”
He removed Patricia, Scott, and Melissa from the group immediately afterward. Thirty seconds later, Patricia began shouting in the lobby because screenshots of the original messages had suddenly reached reporters, although Daniel had no idea who had leaked them.
Downstairs, Melissa quietly deleted the screenshots from her own phone.
By sunrise, the story had exploded beyond Seattle. National networks displayed Patricia’s public claim that the Mercer family was “extremely close” beside the message she’d actually sent while Lily was fighting for her life.
