I stared at Dad, realizing that my brother hadn’t merely ignored Chloe’s behavior. He’d actively participated in a legal effort to take away our father’s freedom and control his fortune.
Dad noticed my expression and struggled to sit upright.
“Emma, there’s something you need to find. In my study, behind the wooden panel of the third bookshelf, there’s a wall safe.”
He explained that he’d hidden a folder containing bank statements, routing numbers, and evidence of Ryan’s suspicious transactions. Those records might establish what had happened to his money before the guardianship petition could proceed.
I promised to retrieve the documents and began putting on my coat. Before I reached the door, however, my phone rang again from an unfamiliar number.
A heavily distorted voice spoke before I could identify myself.
“If you enter that house, Agent Vance, you’ll be the one leaving in handcuffs. Check your own bank accounts before you start investigating anyone else.”
The caller disconnected immediately, leaving me staring at the screen. Someone knew exactly what I intended to do and had apparently prepared a way to turn the investigation against me.
Until that moment, I’d believed I was uncovering a scheme to steal my father’s estate. Now I understood that the people behind it were also preparing to destroy my career and freedom if I tried to stop them…
The anonymous threat made one thing clear: whoever was stealing my father’s money knew I was investigating. I refused to abandon him, but I also knew that entering his house without precautions could give Chloe exactly the opportunity she wanted.
I contacted two trusted investigators from the local FBI field office and arranged for them to accompany me. When we arrived, the property appeared unusually immaculate, as though someone had spent hours removing every trace of the previous night’s confrontation.
The furniture was perfectly arranged, and the broken lamp Dad had described was missing. A decorative plant stood in its place, suggesting that Chloe had carefully cleaned up evidence of the struggle before anyone could examine the scene.
I went directly to my father’s study and located the third bookshelf. Behind a removable wooden panel, I discovered the wall safe he’d described and entered the six-digit combination he’d given me.
The door opened, but the folder containing his financial records was gone. Someone had reached the safe before us and removed nearly everything inside.
As I examined the empty compartment, I noticed a small black USB drive wedged into a narrow corner. Whoever had emptied the safe had apparently overlooked it, so I carefully secured the device in an evidence pouch.
An hour later, I brought the drive to a secured forensic room at the FBI field office. I expected to recover copies of the bank statements Dad had hidden, but the device contained something far more dangerous.
When I connected it to an isolated forensic terminal, a malicious program unexpectedly activated. The screen displayed an urgent warning that the software was attempting to erase data and compromise the computer.
I immediately shut down the affected equipment to contain the threat. The incident confirmed that someone had anticipated my search and deliberately planted a device designed to interfere with the investigation.
A cybersecurity technician named Harris arrived shortly afterward and explained that he’d managed to preserve a fragment of the information associated with the malicious program. Although much of the data was damaged, he’d recovered several banking identifiers.
“Agent Vance, I think you need to see this. The drive was connected to offshore financial records.”
He handed me a tablet displaying transactions involving accounts in the Cayman Islands. The records indicated that more than $400,000 had been diverted from my father’s trust during the previous two months.
That discovery supported Dad’s suspicions about the missing money. However, when I examined the account ownership information, I noticed something that made the entire situation considerably worse.
The offshore accounts weren’t registered to Ryan or Chloe. They were listed under my full legal name, Emma M. Vance, and associated with my Social Security number.
I studied the screen, realizing that the anonymous caller’s warning had been deliberate. Someone had created a financial trail making it appear that I was responsible for stealing from my own father.
If those records were presented without the surrounding evidence, I could become the primary suspect in the embezzlement investigation. My career, reputation, and freedom could all be threatened while Chloe continued pursuing control of Dad’s estate.
The scheme was more sophisticated than I’d initially imagined. Chloe hadn’t simply arranged to portray my father as mentally incompetent; she’d also prepared evidence intended to discredit the one family member capable of challenging her.
I asked Harris to preserve everything he’d recovered and begin tracing the origins of the accounts. Establishing who had actually opened them would be essential to proving that my identity had been used without authorization.
As I considered my next move, my phone began ringing again. This time, the caller wasn’t anonymous, and the name on the screen immediately brought me back to my father’s warning at the police station.
It was Ryan, the brother who had witnessed the disputed guardianship documents and apparently helped Chloe gain access to our father’s fortune.
I answered, expecting another lie or an attempt to persuade me to abandon the investigation. Instead, I heard a trembling voice that barely resembled the confident man I’d known all my life.
“Emma, please. I need to tell you what Chloe has done, and I need you to hear me before it’s too late.”
Ryan’s voice sounded so shaken that I barely recognized him. He begged me to meet him, insisting there were things about Chloe that I needed to understand before she destroyed our family completely.
I didn’t trust him, especially after discovering his signature on the documents intended to strip Dad of his independence. Nevertheless, I agreed to hear him out under conditions that would prevent him from bringing anyone else.
“You have ten minutes. Meet me on the third underground level of the federal building’s parking garage, and come alone.”
Ryan arrived wearing a wrinkled designer suit, his eyes bloodshot and his hands visibly trembling. He looked exhausted, as though he hadn’t slept in days, and struggled to meet my gaze.
“You think I planned everything,” he said. “You think I wanted Dad to get hurt.”
“I know you signed the medical proxy, Ryan. You helped Chloe prepare to have our father declared incompetent while his money disappeared.”
Ryan leaned against a concrete pillar and covered his face with his hands. When he finally answered, his voice was thick with shame.
“I didn’t want any of this, Emma. She forced me.”
I demanded an explanation, unwilling to accept fear as an excuse for betraying our father. Ryan eventually admitted that the situation had begun three years earlier, when his business was approaching bankruptcy.
Desperate to keep his firm operating, he’d secretly taken money from clients’ pension funds. He claimed he’d intended to repay everything, but Chloe discovered the fraudulent transactions before he could conceal them.
“She found the ledgers,” he confessed. “She threatened to send them to the SEC unless I did exactly what she wanted.”
According to Ryan, Chloe used the evidence to pressure him into marrying her and giving her access to Dad’s financial accounts. She threatened to expose his crimes and send him to prison whenever he resisted.
When Dr. Leonard Voss arrived to evaluate our father, Ryan already knew Chloe intended to obtain legal control over the estate. She forced him to witness the disputed medical documents by threatening to report his embezzlement immediately.
“So you sacrificed Dad to protect yourself?” I asked.
Ryan lowered his head, unable to deny it. He admitted that his cowardice had allowed Chloe to isolate and intimidate our father, although he insisted he’d finally tried to confront her after witnessing the physical abuse.
“I told her it had to stop,” he explained. “That’s when she decided to destroy you, too.”
He confirmed that Chloe had arranged for offshore accounts to be opened using my stolen identity. She’d been preparing to frame me for the missing money long before I became involved in Dad’s case.
Ryan then produced a prepaid phone containing access to files he’d secretly copied from Chloe’s computer. He claimed the evidence included financial records and recordings of conversations between Chloe and Dr. Voss.
“I know you may never forgive me,” he said. “But I want to help stop her before she hurts Dad again.”
I took the phone and asked where Chloe was hiding. Ryan explained that she’d disappeared approximately an hour earlier after discovering that I’d removed Dad from the family home.
