My husband sta:bbed me twice while defending his mistress over nothing more than a tiny scratch. I woke up in the ICU three days later, but what he didn’t know was that as I lay ble:e:d:ing on our living room rug, I had quietly tapped “Record” on my smartwatch…

The last thing I heard before everything went dark was my husband’s voice. Julian stood in our living room beside Selina Cole, the woman who had haunted our three-year marriage from the beginning, and stared at me with a rage I had never seen before.

“If you ever touch Selina again, I swear to God I will kill you.”

My name is Nora Vance, and until that afternoon, I had still believed there might be something left of our marriage worth saving. Julian was the CEO of Vance Global, and I had given up my own career to build a life around him, never realizing how completely his first love still controlled him.

Selina had arrived at our house crying over a small scratch on her arm and claimed I had cornered her downtown and pushed her. The accusation was absurd because I had spent the entire day at home in my silk pajamas and had not even gone outside.

“Julian, that is an absolute lie.”

He did not give me a chance to explain. He had been cutting an apple moments earlier, and when he picked up the knife again, something in his expression turned frighteningly empty.

“Did you put your hands on her?”

“No!”

Selina stood behind him and pretended she wanted to calm the situation, but every word she chose only pushed him further. Her trembling voice sounded innocent, yet I could see exactly what she was doing.

“Please, Julian. Just leave it alone. I don’t want you two fighting over me.”

What happened next came so quickly that I barely had time to understand it. A sharp pain tore through my abdomen, then another, and I collapsed onto the Persian rug while Julian stepped past me and immediately turned his attention to Selina.

“It’s okay now.”

Through fading vision, I watched him place his jacket around her shoulders. Selina looked over him toward me, and the small smile on her face made me understand that whatever had happened was not simply the result of an uncontrolled argument.

If I survived, I needed evidence of what they might say when they believed I could no longer hear them. I let my body go limp, kept my left arm hidden beneath me, and slowly tapped my smartwatch twice to activate the voice recorder.

“She’s gone. I… I did it, Selina. Just like you said. We’re free.”

Three days later, I opened my eyes in the ICU with severe internal injuries and pain that made even the smallest movement difficult. The first clear memory that returned was the recording stored on my smartwatch and the confession Julian had made while he believed I was dying.

Not long afterward, Julian entered my room carrying an enormous bouquet of white roses. He looked exhausted and devastated, performing the role of a remorseful husband so convincingly that another version of me might once have believed every expression on his face.

“Nora…”

Before he could move any closer, Dr. Caleb Reed stepped between him and my hospital bed. His calm posture made it obvious that he had no intention of letting Julian approach without hearing what he had to say first.

“Mr. Vance, before you come any closer, there is a medical reality you need to understand.”

Julian frowned and stared at him.

“I’m her husband. Get out of my way.”

Dr. Reed remained exactly where he was.

“Exactly. Which makes this even more tragic.”

He removed an ultrasound image from my chart and placed it on the tray beside the bed. Two tiny silhouettes were visible on the image, and Julian stared at them for several seconds without understanding what he was seeing.

Dr. Reed finally looked directly at him.

“Your wife was eight weeks pregnant when she arrived in my operating room.”

The meaning of those words reached Julian slowly, but once it did, every trace of color disappeared from his face. For the first time since he entered the room, the performance vanished, and what remained was pure shock.

Dr. Caleb Reed’s words seemed to stop the entire room. Julian stared at the ultrasound image as if his mind refused to understand what he was seeing, while I remained silent beneath the hospital blankets and watched the truth reach him piece by piece.

“It was twins.”

The bouquet slipped from Julian’s hands and scattered across the floor. He stumbled backward until his shoulders struck the wall, then looked from the ultrasound to me with an expression that mixed horror, disbelief, and something that resembled grief.

“Both heartbeats… gone?”

Dr. Reed did not soften the answer. Julian sank toward the floor, gripping his hair as he struggled to breathe through the realization that the violence he had directed at me had also ended two pregnancies he had never known existed.

“Nora, I swear to God, I didn’t know!”

I looked at the man I had once placed above my own ambitions and believed I would grow old beside. Whatever sympathy his tears might once have awakened in me was gone, because ignorance did not erase what he had chosen to do.

Before I could respond, the fluorescent lights above us flickered sharply and went out. The ICU dropped into darkness, and the steady sounds of the monitoring equipment disappeared for a moment as the backup generators struggled to engage.

Dr. Reed immediately reached for the penlight in his pocket. When the small beam came on, Julian was no longer sitting near the foot of my bed.

He was standing beside my head.

The grief that had covered his face seconds earlier had vanished. His posture was rigid, and beneath his suit jacket, his hand closed around a small pre-filled syringe.

“You always were too resilient, Nora. Selina said you wouldn’t die from two simple punctures. She said you were too stubborn.”

In that instant, everything became clear. The flowers, the tears, and the desperate apology had never been about remorse; Julian had used the performance to get close enough to finish what he had started.
