Your eyes may notice one picture before your brain realizes there is another one hiding inside it. π
At first glance, these images appear to show something familiar:
People.
Couples looking at each other.
Parents and children.
Human silhouettes interacting with one another.
But look a little longerβ¦
There are animals hiding in the empty spaces between them. π³
This clever artwork uses a visual technique called negative space β the empty area around and between objects becomes a second image.
And that creates a fascinating little challenge:
βWHAT DO YOU SEE FIRST β HUMANS OR ANIMALS?β
So, what did your eyes notice before anything else?
π€ HUMANS
or
πΎ ANIMALS
Before reading the explanation, take another look at the picture and see if you can find both.
π€ IF YOU SEE THE HUMANS FIRSTβ¦
The darker shapes immediately stand out as people.
In the different scenes, you can recognize human profiles, couples, parents, and children interacting with one another.
The figures are the most obvious elements of the artwork, so your brain may naturally focus on them first.
Look at the faces, body outlines, and the way the people are positioned.
Once you recognize the human figures, the image seems straightforward.
But then comes the trickβ¦
πΎ LOOK AT THE EMPTY SPACE
Now stop focusing on the people.
Instead, pay attention to the bright spaces between them.
Suddenly, those βemptyβ areas start taking shape.
πΆ In the large image on the left, the space between the figures forms the outline of an animal.
π° In the smaller image near the top right, the negative space creates another animal-like shape.
π± In the lower-right image, the space between the figures forms yet another animal.
The strange part is that nothing was actually added to the picture.
