Who Is Smarter — A Or B?

WHO IS SMARTER — A OR B?

Two people are trying to move the exact same heavy stone.

The stone weighs 16.5 kg (about 36 lbs).

Both are heading in the same direction.

But they are using completely different methods…

PERSON A is behind the stone, pushing it forward with both hands.

PERSON B is in front, using a rope over his shoulder to pull the stone across the rough ground.

At first glance, you might think:

“They’re both doing basically the same thing.”

But look closer.

One method can make the job much easier depending on how the stone actually moves.

And the difference comes down to something very simple:

FRICTION.

If A’s push causes the rounded stone to roll, the resistance can be much lower than dragging the stone across the ground.

Rolling resistance is generally much smaller than the resistance involved in sliding a heavy object over a rough surface.

That means A may be able to move the stone with considerably less effort — provided the stone is actually able to roll rather than simply slide.

B has a different problem.

The rope is pulling the stone forward while the stone remains in contact with the rough ground.

If it is sliding rather than rolling, B has to overcome the friction between the stone and the surface for as long as the stone is moving.

That’s where things get interesting.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT STRENGTH

A clever solution isn’t always about having stronger muscles.

The way you apply force matters too.

When pushing from behind, a person can brace their feet against the ground and use their legs, body weight, and arms together.

With a rope, the person may be able to use their body weight effectively as well, but the exact force required depends on the rope angle, the stone’s shape, the surface, and whether the stone rolls or slides.

So the picture is really asking you to think about mechanics rather than muscle.

SO… WHO IS THE SMARTER ONE?

Under the intended setup — where A can get the rounded stone to roll while B is dragging it — the answer is:

A

Not because A is necessarily stronger…

But because A is taking advantage of the stone’s shape and reducing the resistance that has to be overcome.

And there’s another practical consideration.

If a heavy object suddenly stops because it hits an obstacle, a person pulling from the front can experience a sudden jerk through the rope.

That doesn’t automatically make pulling unsafe, but it shows why the setup, rope angle, footing, and control all matter when moving heavy objects.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN!

Before reading the explanation, look at the picture again.

Forget about who looks stronger.

Ask yourself:

Who is using physics to make the job easier?

A⃣ The person pushing
B⃣ The person pulling

Comment A or B BEFORE checking the answer!

Did you choose based on friction and the way the stone moves, or did you simply pick the person who looked like they had the easier job?

This is a simplified physics puzzle. The real force required depends on the stone’s shape, mass, surface, rope angle, and whether it rolls or slides.
