“Listen carefully. My uncle is a senior prosecutor in the D.A.’s office. I’m a practicing attorney. You’re not going to win anything against us.”
For years, I had watched Carter and Eleanor use their confidence as a weapon. They believed their connections, money, and reputation meant nobody would challenge them.
They were wrong about one thing.
They thought I was powerless because I had never used my family’s influence.
My father had always taught me something different.
“You never show people your power unless there is no other choice,” he once told me. “You use it only when someone leaves you no other way out.”
Standing there with blood beneath me and my unborn son still inside me, I realized I had reached that point.
I lifted my head.
“Then call my father.”
Carter laughed.
Eleanor laughed with him.
“Your father?” she mocked. “That man who drives around in his old truck and thinks he can fix everything?”
Carter picked up my damaged phone and opened the contact saved simply as Dad.
“Sure,” he said. “Let’s hear how he plans to rescue you.”
He pressed call and put it on speaker.
The first ring echoed through the kitchen.
Then the second.
Carter still looked amused because he believed nothing had changed. He believed I was still the woman who apologized, stayed quiet, and endured whatever he and his mother decided to say.
The third ring came.
Then someone answered.
“Hello?”
My father’s voice was calm.
Carter immediately leaned toward the phone.
“She’s being dramatic because she came home late and got upset when we called her out.”
My father ignored him.
“Sweetheart?”
I tried to answer, but another contraction forced me to grip the counter.
“Dad…”
The change in his voice was immediate.
“Where are you?”
I looked at the shattered phone in Carter’s hand, the blood beneath me, and the man standing between me and the exit.
My voice barely came out.
“I’m hurt.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“She fell because she’s clumsy. Don’t listen to her lies.”
My father remained silent for a moment.
Then he asked the question neither Carter nor Eleanor expected.
“Is Carter stopping you from calling for medical help?”
Carter’s expression changed.
