I came home late from my shift expecting nothing more than a quiet night, but my husband met me at the door and stru:ck me hard enough to spl!t my lip while his mother stood only a few feet away. Less than ten minutes later, I was bleeding down my legs and l0sing my baby on their kitchen floor—and as I fought to stay conscious, they still looked at me as though I was the problem they needed to get rid of.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.

He reached toward the phone, but I forced the words out before he could end the call.

“He broke my phone.”

Carter froze.

Then my father spoke directly to him.

“Carter, put the phone down and listen to me.”

The kitchen became completely quiet.

Carter had spent the entire evening shouting, threatening, and reminding me of his power. But my father did not raise his voice, did not threaten him, and did not explain who he was.

He simply made him stop.

Carter’s thumb hovered over the red button.

The call remained connected.
